"Adopt-A-Stream" is a volunteer initiative in Mecklenburg County that aims to clean up the city's waterways following rainstorms.
Statement
The Challenge
The challenge was to create a design that was both simple and easily understandable, even for drivers traveling at 45MPH, while effectively representing the essence of Mecklenburg County. The design needed to quickly communicate key aspects of the county, balancing clarity with visual impact.
The Story Behind
The "Adopt-A-Stream" program was born out of a community-driven initiative to protect and restore local waterways. It empowers volunteers to take responsibility for sections of streams, cleaning up litter, monitoring water quality, and promoting environmental awareness. By encouraging hands-on involvement, "Adopt-A-Stream" not only enhances the beauty and function of waterways but also deepens the community's connection to its natural resources.
Solution
The design solution for the "Adopt-A-Stream" street signage focuses on simplicity with bold, high-contrast colors and clean typography making the sign legible from a distance, even at higher speeds. Incorporating recognizable water-themed icons or symbols, such as a stream or fish, reinforces the environmental focus of the program. The signage raises awareness about the initiative to foster environmental responsibility.
- Created patches as a token of appreciation and t-shirts for volunteers.
- Made key chains and lanyards to be distributed to everybody who volunteered.
- Displaying the sign that reads "Team Name" that indicates the people that worked in the area.
